Identification of the Caterpillar
Finally a photo of the caterpillar was eventually sent up to Dr Palma at Te Papa and passed on to a Lepidopteran specialist in Nelson and identified as the species, – Agrotis innominata Hudson 1898 Lepidoptera: Noctuidae – the Sand Cutworm being the name of the caterpillar and is a species endemic to New Zealand.
Doctor Palma also sent a copy of a paper by Dr B. H. Patrick and Dr K. J. Green dealing with the biology of this moth species. (New Zealand Entomologist, 1991 Volume )
